Group Leader's Update, 12th July 24
Well, after a year in which everything that could go wrong (with some visits....) did go wrong, I'm throwing in the towel.
It's been fun - mostly - but it's definitely time for some fresh ideas on how to do it differently. And so - all you art-lovers out there - here's an opportunity to have a go !
If anyone's tempted, then please feel free to get in touch if you'd like any tips based on my experience over the past 12 months.
Humpty Dumpty
sat on the wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the King's horses,
and all the King's men, couldn't put Humpty together again.
We intend to visit various art galleries / museums using only public transport for travel. The idea is to see, in person, as much of the very best art on show in the UK today as is do-able within one day.
The proposed destinations are :
9/11/23 - National Galleries of Scotland (Edinburgh)
14/12/23 - Victoria & Albert Museum (Dundee)
2?/11/23; 11/1/24 - National Glass Centre (Sunderland)
8/2/24 - Manchester Art Gallery (Manchester)
5/10, 12/10/23; 24/1, 21/2/24 - Stained Glass (in various churches, York)
14/3/24 - The Burrell Collection (Glasgow)
11/4/24 - The Lowry Collection (Salford)
9/5/24 - The Shipley Art Gallery & The Baltic Centre (Gateshead)
13/6/24 - Leeds Art Gallery (Leeds)
11/7/24 - The Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy (London)
8/8/24 - Kelvin Grove Gallery (Glasgow)
I anticipate that some days will be very long (12 + hours), so a degree of stamina / fitness is required. And there will of course be travel, meal(s) & (sometimes) entry costs: these will vary considerably, depending on venue’s location.
There's no obligation to come on every trip - members can join in as many or as few as they like.
I envisage minimal ‘leading’: I’ll research venues, their temporary & permanent exhibitions, train (& local bus, where applicable) times and costs. And in advance of each visit I’ll prepare a brief, with info about the pick of that venue’s exhibits if I can find out what they are.
Group members will make own travel arrangements, but I’ll look into possible ‘group admission’ and tours for each venue if numbers justify this.
Please contact the Group Leader if you'd like to ask anything.
